Career - Pathology
Pathology (also referred to as pathobiology) is the study of the causes and developmental processes of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Pathology is often offered as a subject in highly structured pre-designed Bachelor degrees such as Medical Science. As part of a Medical Science degree pathology is often studied alongside the subjects biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, hematology, histology and immunology. Medical Science graduates most commonly find employment as laboratory assistants, laboratory technicians, laboratory scientists and laboratory officers in pathology, hospital and other diagnostic laboratories. Due to the variety of subjects covered in a Medical Science degree, graduates are well adapted candidates for any of the departments within the modern pathology practise. Due to the tailored nature of Medical Science degrees, graduates usually find employment without the requirement for further study to higher degrees such as Honours, Masters or PhD.
