Career   -   Hematology / haematology

The study of hematology (also spelt haematology) involves blood cells, components of the blood, blood producing and blood carrying organs & tissues, diseases of the blood, modern blood banking, blood testing and blood transfusion technologies. Hematology is usually studied as a subject in most Medical Science degrees. A Medical Science degree with a hematology component competitively places graduates with an advantage for niche career pathways in blood banking and blood testing. Medical Science graduates may also find employment as laboratory assistants, laboratory technicians, laboratory scientists and laboratory officers in pathology, hospital and other diagnostic laboratories. Due to the tailored nature of Medical Science degrees, graduates usually find employment without the requirement for further study to higher degrees such as Honours, Masters or PhD. However, if a career in research is desired, a Bachelor degree with hematology associated subjects may serve as an excellent foundation for research into disorders and diseases associated with the blood.
